भारतवर्ष में इस समय देशी विदेशी मूल के अनेक संवतों का प्रचलन है, किंतु भारत के सांस्कृतिक इतिहास की दृष्टि से सर्वाधिक लोकप्रिय 'विक्रम संवत' ही है। आज से लगभग 2,068 वर्ष यानी 57 ईसा पूर्व में भारतवर्ष के प्रतापी राजा विक्रमादित्य ने देशवासियों को शकों के अत्याचारी शासन से मुक्त किया था। उसी विजय की स्मृति में चैत्र माह के शुक्ल पक्ष की प्रतिपदा तिथि से विक्रम संवत का भी आरम्भ हुआ था। नये संवत की शुरुआत प्राचीन काल में नया संवत चलाने से पहले विजयी राजा को अपने राज्य में रहने वाले सभी लोगों को ऋण-मुक्त करना आवश्यक होता था। राजा विक्रमादित्य ने भी इसी परम्परा का पालन करते हुए अपने राज्य में रहने वाले सभी नागरिकों का राज्यकोष से कर्ज़ चुकाया और उसके बाद चैत्र शुक्ल प्रतिपदा से मालवगण के नाम से नया संवत चलाया। भारतीय कालगणना के अनुसार वसंत ऋतु और चैत्र शुक्ल प्रतिपदा की तिथि अति प्राचीन काल से सृष्टि प्रक्रिया की भी पुण्य तिथि रही है। वसंत ऋतु में आने वाले वासंतिक 'नवरात्र' का प्रारम्भ भी सदा इसी पुण्य तिथि से होता है। विक्रमादित्य ने भारत की इन तमाम कालगणना...
