Kausani Gandhi's & Panth's Switzerland of India.
Please do not confuse this place with the one named Kasauli or Kasol which is another hill station located in Himachal Pradesh. Kausani is a hill town which is located in the state of Uttarakhand.Kausani was originally called Valna. Kausani offers the magic of the deep pine forests and the majestic mountains. Kausani the birthplace of the famed poet Sumitra Nandan Pant is often referred to as the 'Switzerland of India. Situated among mountains and trees, the peaks Trishul and Nanda Devi are clearly visible from here.In 1929, Mahatma Gandhi spent 14 days here and brought his thoughts out in his book called Anasakti Yoga. The place where he stayed is called the Anasakti Ashram. This Ashram was earlier the guest house in a tea estate. Kausani is ideal place to visit with the family. Because of its beauty,tourists come here all through the year. From morning to evening, from valleys to peaks, thousands of different colours can be seen here. Kausani sits atop a mountain ridge which is around 1890 meters above sea level in the Himalayan foothills and is surrounded by a thick cover of pine trees. The town overlooks Someshwar Valley from one side and also provides some marvelous panoramic views of the surrounding peaks.
The first and foremost thing you might want to see in Kausani is the panoramic views of the surrounding Himalayas.The Anashakti Ashram which was setup by Gandhiji’s apprentice Sarla Behn which works for the welfare of the Kumauni women. You can also find a gallery of various pictures of Gandhiji during the different phases in his life. You can also visit the Pant House which is the residence of the great Indian poet Sumitranandan Pant. You also might not want to miss the refreshing fragrance of the Kausani Tea estate and the factory. The Rudradhari Caves and Waterfalls are also a must visit spot which is located in the Kailash region. The way to the caves and waterfalls also transverses through green paddy fields and the temple itself is situated in a picturesque location between the alcoves of the Himalayan hillocks.
How to Reach
Reaching Kausani can be done in a number of ways. If you decide to travel by air you might want to get down at the Pithoragarh airport which is around 112 kilometers away from Kausani. If you want to travel by road then buses and taxis are available directly from Delhi to Kausani.While travelling to Kausani via road you can also take rest stops at other famous hill towns in Uttarakhand such as Almora, Ranikhet and Nainital. Almora is the best place for a rest stop when travelling to Kausani. The nearest Railway station to Kausani is Kathgodam which is well connected with trains from the major cities in India.

Pant Museum : A little away from the Kaushani bus stand is a museum named after the Hindi poet Sumitranandan Pant. The house which has the museum is the poet's house of his childhood days.
Pinakeshwar : 9050 feet above sea level, this hill station is 20 kms from Kaushani. Here there is a temple of Shiva from where one can view many valleys. Around Pinakeshwar are other places like Old Pinakeshwar, Gopalkot, Huria etc.
Baijnath :17 kms from Kaushani, the most important historical place in Uttarakhand is Baijnath which is situated on the banks of the Gomti river. The Baijnath temple here was built thousands of years ago and can still be admired for its carvings and sculptures.
Someshwar :15 kms away from Kaushani, this famous Shiva temple was built by King Somchand of the Chand Dynasty. In March every year a festival is held here.
Lakshmi Ashram :1 km away from the Anasakti Ashram, this place is a center run by women who do social service. Gandhiji's disciple, Sarala Behen spent her life here doing social service. This ashram is located in a solitary area in a dense jungle.
